A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE STATE’S TIMBER AND FOREST PRODUCTS COMMUNITY AND COMMENDING THE CREATION OF THE SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITIATIVE.

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE STATE’S TIMBER AND FOREST PRODUCTS COMMUNITY AND COMMENDING THE CREATION OF THE SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITIATIVE.

WHEREAS, Arkansas, The Natural State, takes great pride in our state’s rich bounty of natural resources, and the careful stewardship of those precious assets is essential if future generations are to benefit from those resources; and WHEREAS, the Arkansas timber and forest products community, in recognition of its stewardship responsibilities in nurturing the forest resource, has committed itself to the principle of sustainable forestry by initiating the Sustainable Forestry Initiative to promote, educate, train, and monitor adherence to sustaining the forest resource for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Arkansas is blessed with more than eighteen million, four hundred thousand (18,400,000) acres of renewable, constantly growing forest land occupied by approximately twelve billion, two hundred million (12,200,000,000) living trees; and

WHEREAS, the timber and forest products community in our great state employs more than forty-five thousand (45,000) Arkansans with an annual payroll in excess of one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000); and

WHEREAS, forests will continue to yield a biodiversity of wildlife and plant materials, clean water, purification and cleaning of air, prevention and reduction of siltation due to runoff into streams, and measurable aesthetic values known only to each person enjoying them; and

WHEREAS, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a self-regulatory program based on the responsible environmental stewardship of the forests, water resources, and wildlife.

NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ARKANSAS STATE SENATE OF THE EIGHTY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS, that the members of this body recognize and commend the Arkansas timber and forest products community for its commitment to responsible use of natural resources and the creation of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative as a means to that end.
